Repeal & Revelry

at Peter Kern Library

A Five Night tribute to Repeal Day

Starting December 5, Peter Kern Library will transform into a tribute to 1933’s End of Prohibition and the return of legal libations. For five evenings only, our bartenders are pouring a dedicated menu that honors the classics, the contraband, and the craft that grew in the shadows of Prohibition.

Step inside, sink into the low light, and enjoy the romance of a once-forbidden pastime.

A Return to the Nightlife Once Declared Illegal

From 1920 to 1933, the United States entered an era of enforced temperance that reshaped the art of drinking. Bars closed, distilleries went dark, and the country’s cocktail culture slipped into secrecy. Yet in the quiet corners of private clubs and behind hidden doors, speakeasies flourished. Bartenders continued their craft out of sight, refining recipes, improvising with limited ingredients, and preserving the rituals of the American bar.

On December 5, 1933, the 21st Amendment brought those clandestine years to an end. Crowds filled the streets, newspapers announced the dry era was over, and revelers finally returned to legally lit bars. It was the night America raised a glass in unison.

A Prelude to Misfit Bar

This Repeal of Prohibition experience sets the stage for the launch of Misfit Bar, a Holiday Pop-up Experience at Peter Kern Library, beginning December 10. Join us early, meet the team behind the bar, and experience the room in a different era before the holiday mischief begins.
